Poem: City Streets

Eyes meet,

      look away!

Talking

       laughing

Whispers

      what was that?

A party

       a funeral

Broadway

       Wall Street

Hangouts

      meetings

Brunch

      with a guy?

                        gal?

                           mother?

                                      father?

                                                friends?

                    strangers.

Missed connections

                    lost loves

Thinking

                    wondering

Believing

                    forgiving

HUSH!

        Thoughts.

                Wishes.

                       Wants.

                                Needs.

         Breathe!

    Inhale

                   Exhale

Swish.

        Swoosh.

Tap.

           Tap.

                      Tap.

Tick.

           Tock.

Tick.

            Tock.

Walking.

          Running.

                  Almost there.

Eyes meet,

     Look away!

Just a sec,

           a connection made

                          a moment lost

           never regained.

This poem was inspired by the city rush. As one of my friends pointed out: each day you pass by people going about their day. Each one has their own struggles and successes; they have their own story. When will you see that person again — maybe tomorrow, maybe never? Maybe in five years you’ll actually meet, without ever knowing that once long ago your eyes met at a city street corner.

We past by people or see people throughout the day, and their story is a mystery. At time my Dad and I will play the game, what’s their story? It is always interesting to think about what others may be going through.

Yes! I used to play that with my brother. Now, it’s usually where I get inspiration for short story ideas.
